I’m not sure why this is an argument. I think both have their pros and cons. As an avid reader who was reading long before e-readers and the internet as we know it existed. Heck cell phones and computers in homes weren’t even an everyday thing yet. I know I’m dating myself but I think understanding where one comes from makes a difference.
I used to pillage the school library like teenage boys would raid a refrigerator. Incidentally, I’ve had teen boys in the house and… Man, can they eat you out of house and home. Books were my escape from a rather unhappy childhood. I found solace in books they could take me away.
That said my library got larger and larger as I became an adult. To where some of my most dog-eared tombs had to be -gasp- thrown out. It was expanding at an exponential rate as my hobbies increased. My youngest son was also afflicted. So his library entered my own. We have some of the same interests and would share books too. Strangely enough, we both have an affinity for the same music too. But I digress.
This was about the time I discovered fan-fiction. Woo… Fresh stories I could read without having to go to the library or turn my house into a library that I didn’t have space for.
I’m going to say it. I know a lot of authors shit on fan-fiction. But I have to say I have found some of the most riveting stories and great writing on fan-fiction sites. I will admit there is a lot of bad writing too but I still feel it’s a good place to bust your chops if you are a beginner.
This brought me to using my tablet as an e-reader. I have to say I like both. E-readers are handy and usually lighter weight than books. However, when you live as rural as I do sometimes depending on technology is inconvenient because we may lose electricity for days at a time during a severe storm so I still keep physical books as well.
I personally don’t find this to be a debate. Get whatever version works best for you.
