I wasn’t sure how to start out this blog post because so much has happened in such a short time. Last month when I posted, I was eagerly looking forward to the second half of 2025. I did not know how things would play out. All my life, I’ve dealt with insomnia for a few days here and there, but over the past few months, it has become excessive. I was sleeping 4-5 hours every other day.
I tried melatonin and over-the-counter sleeping pills, even my husband’s prescription ones, and nothing seemed to work. I stopped editing, writing, and even knitting. Then I had another sinusitis attack, my third in six months, just before I went to my six month follow up after my thyroid surgery. She ordered some tests, and I waited a week for her to call about the results. Turns out I have a severe vitamin D deficiency. (When I told Mr. V about it, I saw the look on his face, and the joke he was about to make told him if he made that joke he’d be sleeping in the barn with the mice. Lol, the man is fifty-two years old and sometimes makes jokes like a horny teenage boy.)
I also discovered that a deficiency of this type can cause a lot of issues I chalked up to other things. The constant ringing in my ears (I have tinnitus, but it was never constant.) The tingling in my hands all the time (carpal tunnel) and many other things. Even my sinusitis could have been caused by the deficiency. A lack of vitamin D makes you more susceptible to illness.
Anyway, after some confusion with my mail order pharmacy, I’m now on day three of vitamin therapy. I’ve slept for two nights for ten hours, and it’s been fantastic. I’ve put my book on hold until I can edit without creating more errors than there were to begin with. Though I’m exhausted by 4 pm, I sense things are improving.
