Dear Coterie,

I wanted to pause for a moment and think about how significant this day is in the US. Memorial Day is not just a day off work or a time for barbecues and sales; it is a day to honor and remember the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for their country.

This day holds a special place in my heart, as I come from a family with members in every branch of the armed forces and have experienced the loss of my husband who served. I have seen firsthand the courage and selflessness of those who choose to protect our freedom, often at great personal cost.

Memorial Day traces back to the Civil War aftermath, with communities honoring and decorating fallen soldiers’ graves. It transformed into the federal holiday we celebrate today, honoring all who served in the military.

I remember as a child, handing out poppies in remembrance of our fallen heroes. The gratitude and emotion that I witnessed from people when they accepted these small tokens of remembrance have stayed with me to this day. It is a reminder of the deep impact that the sacrifices of our service members have on all of us.

As we gather with loved ones on Memorial Day, let us take a moment to pause and reflect on the true meaning of this day. Let us remember and honor the heroes who have given everything to protect our freedoms and uphold the values that make America great. Let us strive for a more peaceful and just world, where the sacrifices of our heroes will never be forgotten.
