Journey into Mapmaking

Present Map of Illia

When I started to make a map of Illia, I found a browser map site called Azgarr’s Fantasy Map Generator. I played with the configurations until I found something I liked. Be warned though. If you don’t download to your Dropbox you and just save to your browser if you clear your browser cache you will lose your map. This happened to me but thankfully I shared a picture to my friends in Discord and at least I had an image of it (which was lost in the Great Data Loss of May 2021). However I made a quick example of what the maps look like.

The random generator not only changes the map so you can keep clicking till you have a shape you like. It will also do as many countries as you want along with random population information. It’s good program but the aesthetic wasn’t kind of what I was looking for. Don’t get me wrong they have a several different Which brings me to my second mapmaking tool, Wonderdraft.

With Wonderdraft I felt I like I had more control over the look of my map. I could change colors easier and it has layers like photoshop so I could create more depth to the look of the map. Taking my jpg from Azgaar’s and tracing out the shape in Wonderdraft was easy because they allow for overlays. You also have the ability if you can make your own assets to upload them into the program. There are also two packages you can add to the one already in the program as of this writing. Since the program is on my computer I can work on it without internet and add or change things easily.
