Almost everyone has heard of Saint Valentine and his birth or death was in the middle of February, hence the Holiday is known as Valentine’s Day. but did you know the holiday goes back further than that?
Lupercalia was a pagan celebration at the Ides of February. There was a ceremonial sacrifice of animals, a dog for purification, and a goat for fertility. The priests would gently slap the fields and women would with the goat hide that was dipped into the dog’s blood (I realize this sounds like something out of a fantasy story but this was a fertility ritual the people took great pride in being part of). Later in the day, the single young women would place their names into a large urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired with the woman he chose. At the end of the year, the couple would then decide to marry or not. And thus the cycle would repeat.
An interesting premise for a tv show, instead of The 90 Day Fiancee how about The Wife for a Year?
