International Bath Day has a legend going back to Greek mathematician, scientist, and scholar Archimedes. Archimedes discovered that an object’s volume could be accurately measured by submerging it in the water while taking a bath.

It is said that Archimedes was unable to contain his excitement at the discovery and ran through the streets of Syracuse, Greece yelling, “Eureka, Eureka!” To honor Archimedes and his discovery, we commemorate the date he leaped from his bath and ran down Syracuse’s streets.

Why was June 14 picked for this holiday? The ancient legend says that it was one week before the beginning of summer. The astronomical calendar shows that the Summer Solstice takes place on June 21, a week before that would be June 14.

Other little-known holidays on June 14 are:

  •  Army Birthday
  • National Strawberry Shortcake Day
  • National Pop Goes the Weasel Day
  • National Flag Day
  • National Bourbon Day
  • National New Mexico Day
